Singer-songwriter Richard Navarro is digging deep into his city’s folklore for his new collection of songs.
Firewatching features 11 tracks forming both a love letter to his home city of Canterbury and a passionate hymn for social and
environmental justice.
Having previously toured his songs to audiences around the country and Ireland, Richard and fellow musician Nicholas Thurston have put these live tracks onto a new album.
He has drawn inspiration from heroes and heroines of the past.
The opening track Lightfall is a celebration of the firewatchers who protected Canterbury Cathedral from the blitz of June 1st, 1942, while Halfway recounts the significant meeting of Princess Bertha and Queen Ethelbert; Breakout remembers the welcoming hand offered by Elizabeth I to refugees from northern Europe in the 16th century, while the forgotten young boatbuilders of Chatham Dockyard are remembered in Tell it Like It Is.
The album, which is released on Friday, January 24, will be launched in the city at two candlelit concerts at St Peter’s Anglican Church on Saturday, January 25 at 5.30pm and 8pm. Get tickets for the concerts by visiting wegottickets.com
