Threat to shut Post Office

THE Post Office is proposing to close its Vale Road branch in Tunbridge Wells, currently accommodated in the town's Safeway supermarket.

Officials claim it is "the only sensible option" following the store's decision not to renew its contract to run the branch.

Glenn Sully, retail line manager for the Post Office, said customers would continue to have access to two other branches, both within reasonable walking distance.

He said: "Obviously no one wants to see their nearest Post Office close, but against a background which sees Post Office Limited losing £1.7 million a week, we simply have to make tough decisions to ensure a viable urban network."

Before taking a final decision the Post Office is inviting customers to comment on the proposal. Views should be sent, in writing, to: Glenn Sully, Retail Line Manager, Post Office Ltd (NCT), PO Box 641, St Albans, Herts AL1 5XN. The deadline for receipt of comments is February 28.
