Man appears in court after suspected arson attack on flat in Sandhurst Place, Margate

A man charged with arson with intent to endanger life has appeared in court after a fire broke out in a flat.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the blaze in Sandhurst Place in Margate - where thick smoke could be seen billowing from windows.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene on Friday after being called shortly before 6.30pm and crews used a smoke screen to stop the flames from spreading.

One man was treated for smoke inhalation and passed to paramedics.

Apputhurai Gunapalasingam, 56, of Sandhurst Place, Margate, was arrested and charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

He appeared at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court today where he was remanded in custody and the case will next be heard at Canterbury Crown Court on a date to be confirmed.
