Fire at former Milton Pipes factory in Cooks Lane, Sittingbourne, is suspected arson

A blaze which burnt through an old factory this morning is believed to have been started deliberately.

Crews battled the fire at the old Milton Pipes site on Cooks Lane, Sittingbourne at around 6.30am.

Three fire engines attended the scene in the early hours. The tea room of the derelict building was completely destroyed.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "We cannot confirm just yet if this fire was started deliberately but it is being investigated."

Using hoses and specialist equipment, firefighters managed to extinguish the flames after two hours.

No police were present during the incident but the spokesman confirmed they would be consulted on the matter on Monday.

The factory closed in June 2014.
