Trophy opponents Cambridge have lost just twice in their opening 12 games in League 2 and sit second in the table.

The draw, involving 32 teams, was divided north and south.

Gillingham finished second in their group after games against Crawley Town, Ipswich Town and Arsenal, which meant they were set for an away match in the round of 32.

The Gills could have faced any of Exeter City, Cheltenham, Leyton Orient or Cambridge United in draw B of the southern section.

Games will take place on the week commencing December 7.

The Gills utilised their squad for all three of their group games, in a competition manager Steve Evans has often said he has no interest in.

But a win over Crawley and a point against a predominantly young Arsenal team was enough for then to progress to the next stage.

Group winners Arsenal were drawn to face AFC Wimbledon.
