Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has branded the club’s season a success – whatever the outcome of the final few weeks of their League 2 campaign.

The Gills are guaranteed at least a place in the end of season play-offs but, if results go their way, an automatic spot is still within their reach.

Promotion was the aim at the start of the season but even if the Gills don’t go up, Mr Scally insists he’s content with the direction the club is heading.

“We’ve been waiting four or five years for a bit of success and it’s great to now have that,” he said. “It’s fantastic to be in the play-offs and with an outside chance of cracking the top three.

“Whatever happens, you can’t write us off for a top three place and all it could take is for Exeter to blow up and for us to beat Rochdale and Bury. You never know how the script is going to end.

“To get into the play-offs is a success and to get to Wembley would be a great achievement. To win it would be amazing but whichever way it goes our season has already been successful.

“To be in the position where the worst possible finish, if that’s the right phrase, is in the play-offs then that’s a fantastic position to be in. I would rather that than be where the likes of Grimsby, Bournemouth and Chester are, that’s for sure.”
