Evacuation after suspected arson in Rochester High Street

A fire in a disused restaurant in Rochester High Street on Saturday night is being treated as suspicious.

Polic are investigating the cause of the blaze, which broke out in a three-storey building close to the Ship pub.

Thirty firefighters attended the scene at 10:20pm, and found two separate fires raging on the ground floor and first floor.

The fire was brought under control using two hosereel jets and a water hydrant. Firefighters also used thermal imaging equipment and breathing apparatus.

People in the surrounding properties were evacuated but no one was injured.

Firefighters scaled down operations at 11:30pm and informed Kent Police of the suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.
