Parts of a wall next to a medieval castle have been knocked down after a vehicle - thought to be a lorry - crashed into it.

Police were called to Boley Hill car park next to Rochester Castle at 9.25pm yesterday after the collision.

A large section of wall on the edge of the castle grounds had been knocked to the ground.

The circumstances are not known but the vehicle would have mounted a kerb before hitting the wall, near Ye Arrow pub.

Temporary barriers have been put in place by Volker Highways, which is contracted by Medway Council to carry out maintenance work.

A spokesman confirmed they had been asked to make the area safe.

Photographer Yousef Al Nasser saw the damage and says he heard it was caused by a lorry.

The damaged section is not part of the original castle, built around 1127 by William of Corbeil, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Managed by English Heritage, it is currently shut to all visitors in line with government guidelines on Covid-19.
