A2 crash causes severe delays for drivers

Medway drivers found themselves caught up in severe congestion on the A2 near Dartford this morning after an accident involving up to seven vehicles.

Police were called at about 7:15am to the collision on the London-bound carriageway near the Bluewater turn-off.

Lanes 1 and 3 were blocked . The vehicles involved in the crash included a lorry.

Two people are known to have been injured but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue crews attended the scene.

The cause of the collision is not yet known.

A second incident involving two cars happened in the tailbacks caused by the collision but nobody was injured in this incident and the cars were quickly removed to the hard shoulder.

Drivers have been warned about delays on the A2 as a massive road widening scheme enters a new phase. Vehicles queued for about 30 minutes yesterday morning to get through a new road layout which eases them on to a new London-bound stretch of the busy main road near Gravesend. The work, which started in September 2006, is due to be completed at the end of this year. A 50mph speed limit is in place.
