Stones drop into relegation zone

AFC Hornchurch 2 Maidstone United 0

TWO goals in the last 15 minutes condemned Maidstone to a 2-0 defeat at AFC Horchurch on Saturday, a result that saw the Stones drop into the Ryman League Premier Division relegation places.

The home side took the lead on 75 minutes when United failed to clear properly from a corner and Dean Green's shot was deflected past keeper Steve Northwood.

The points were wrapped up four minutes later when Harry Elmes ran onto a long clearance and finished well from the edge of the box via the foot of the post.

Despite the loss, Maidstone produced an improved display and the result could have been different had the visitors enjoyed a bit more luck before the break.

Debutant Mark Saunders header over when well placed and Ian Selley, who was also making his first appearance for the club, saw a 20-yard free kick deflected just wide.

The Stones have now suffered four straight defeats.
