Three years after his death, the last wishes of iconic Maidstone United fan, Elvis, have been granted.

Before he died in 2008, lifelong fan Elvis – real name David Ridgely – asked for his ashes to be interred at Maidstone United’s new ground once a site for the stadium had been determined.

And with building work now well under way off James Whatman Way, that last wish was granted with a ceremony attended by family, friends, fans and club officials.

An instantly recogniseable figure in his Maidstone United regalia, Elvis was possibly the best known of the club’s fans, and messages of condolence and remembrance flooded football internet forums in the aftermath of his death in November 2008.

Despite batting cancer, he continuted to attend home and away games.

More tributes to Elvis appear in the current edition of the Kent Messenger.
