Seal spotted near Maidstone town centre, near the River Medway

An “adorable” seal has been spotted in Kent this morning.

It was seen relaxing on land next to the River Medway, near Maidstone town centre.

Dean Appleton noticed the animal at around 7.30am on his ride to work.

He said it was “on the football ground where Maidstone Rowing Club launches from” and he had not seen it before.

Another passer-by who saw the seal this morning referred to it as “adorable” and “a cutie”.

In April 2021, a seal was spotted in the River Medway just above Allington Lock and another sighting was reported in February.

In 2008, there were sightings of a seal nicknamed Simon at Allington Lock and in 2021, people fell in love with Bradley the seal – who was in fact female – who got stuck in the non-tidal section of the river upstream of the same lock.

Last week, another was spotted on the Medway City Estate in Strood swimming in the River Medway.

It was across from the Pentagon Shopping Centre in Chatham.
