G1llingham's plight at the wrong end of the Nationwide League, Division 1 worsened with a fourth consecutive defeat at Wigan on Saturday.

A debatable 55th minute penalty awarded against skipper Paul Smith and scored by Andy Liddell sent Wigan top and left Gillingham wondering what they must do to win after playing so well twice in five days.

Gillingham were made to pay for Rod Wallace spurning two glorious chances in the third and 66th minutes wwith the goal at his mercy.

Gillingham's misery was compounded by a hamstring injury sustained by top scorer Marlon King who limped off after 21 minutes to be replaced by Paul Shaw.
