Stimson patient on "perfect" pairing

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson is keen to see his first choice strike partnership in action soon.

Stimson sees Mark McCammon and Simeon Jackson as the ideal attacking combination for the Gills.

The Gills boss has recently left 14-goal top scorer Jackson out of the team and since then his side have hit seven goals in their last two outings.

Jackson’s omission has coincided with McCammon’s return to fitness and he’s now starting to show the kind of form that prompted Stimson to make him his number one summer transfer target.

Stimson said: “That’s the funny thing about football. You leave your leading scorer out and you go and score seven goals in two games. How does it work?

“He (Jackson) just has to be patient. Over the next four or five weeks there are so many games and I can’t not see him getting involved and getting back out there scoring goals, which is what he loves doing.

“It was a bold move (when Stimson left Jackson out) but sometimes you have to make decisions that you think are right for the football club. Probably a bolder one at the beginning of the season was leaving the captain out, an international. I think that proved to be the right decision.

“Whether he (Jackson) needs to come back in now only time will tell but he isn’t far off because his training is brilliant. You can see he’s been rested now and he has that little bit of freshness back in him. The big man Mark McCammon has got back in the team and that was my perfect double act up top.

“I’m sure Mark’s feet are getting better and he’s getting fitter and he looks good in training. I would have thought sooner rather than later the little man will be back in there with the big one and they can cause problems for other teams.

“It’s been frustrating as we waited a long while for Mark’s signature and we did a lot of work on it like you do with some players. When we did it we were over the moon but he got injured and it went on and it’s been very frustrating for myself and him because he wants to play. I think he’s now looking the fittest he’s been since he’s been with us and he is a big player.

“He is decent in the air and holds the ball up well and for a little man like Jackson he would be the perfect partner. I’m sure hopefully we will see it by the end of the season and hopefully they’ll hit it off together and get us the goals we all want.”
