New arrivals could be in place by the weekend as Gillingham manager Mark Stimson looks to make final adjustments to his squad.

The Gills boss expects comings and goings imminently as he puts the final pieces in place ahead of next Saturday’s League 2 season opener at Bournemouth.

Stimson knows his transfer budget is tight and he’s been extra busy wheeling and dealing this week as he aims to keep the books balanced.

"We’re trying to make the squad even better if we can and we’re not far off having a very good squad," he said.

"We might add another one or two depending on who becomes available. If that’s the case, then one or two might have to leave to make room for others coming in.

"On Wednesday at 5.30pm, I counted my phone and there were 73 phone calls! It’s been busy and all for the right reasons.

"We’ll try and do something for Thursday and whether it takes place we’ll see but if not we’ll still try for Friday or Saturday before the game.

"There might be a little bit of movement both ways."
