Gills chairman Paul Scally is dreaming of a return to the Championship.
His team embark on a new season in League 1 tomorrow (Saturday) but Mr Scally isn’t afraid to look long-term.
“We are looking to push on and get back into the Championship,” he said. “That has been our goal for the last few years now.
“We will play our game and hopefully we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.
“We have a great team spirit, are a great bunch of lads and have had good coaching and fitness.
“They probably have more fitness than they have ever had because they have never had the benefit of strength and conditioning coaches as before, which is probably my fault really, the budget never really allowed it.
“When there was spare budget, it always went on players.
“You have to have the right back-up staff to give any manager a chance to do better than they otherwise would do, which is why we brought in this extra staff.
“Clearly those extra staff have given us an extra yard or two and helped certain players even more.
“We have a stronger side, physically, we are strong mentally and, of course, on the back of a promotion, it always gives you that bit extra to push on for the season ahead.”
