Oldham Athletic 2 - 0 Gillingham

TWO goals from substitute Luke Beckett in the last six minutes was enough to beat Gillingham at Oldham on Saturday.

Beckett had only been on the pitch for nine minutes when he found himself in the right place to hammer home from close range after the ball had been whipped in from the right-hand side by Andy Liddell.

And he wrapped up the win two minutes later when he was left unmarked to head in another fine cross from David Eyres.

The home side shaded a dull encounter, marshalled by the impressive Liddell in midfield.

Guy Branston's 35th minute header was deflected just wide of Jason Brown's goal by Leon Johnson and Chris Swailes powered a header wide of the post as Oldham threatened from set pieces.

Debutant Anthony Grant almost gave his side the lead three minutes after the break but his header flashed wide with Brown beaten.

Gillingham's Alan Pouton failed to trouble the goalkeeper with a 25-yard drive and later had a goal ruled out.

The visitors' best chance came when they were 2-0 down but substitute Gavin Grant blazed over when he should have scored.

Gills broke effectively on occasions but in truth Ronnie Jepson's side rarely threatened as their attacking problems on the road persisted.

Gillingham: Brown, Clohessy, Cox, Johnson, Jackman, Spiller (, Flynn, Crofts, Pouton, Harris, Fobi-Edusei (Grant 59).
Subs Not Used: Crichton, Sancho, Rose.
Attendance: 5,783.
