Late goal dumps Wings out

Eastbourne Borough 2 Welling 1

WELLING'S three-match unbeaten run was ended in heartbreaking circumstances as they crashed out of the FA Cup with an 88th minute winner for Eastbourne Borough on Saturday.

The Wings, who trailed at the break, battled back in a second half they dominated but were robbed of a replay when Nathan Crabb scored from close range.

Having conceded early in the league game between the two sides last month, Welling did exactly the same thing this time around.

In the 14th minute, Matt Crabb's free-kick was missed at the near post by keeper Jamie Turner and Andy Atkin nodded the ball home.

Welling were nearly level within a minute but Ross Montague's clever lob was well turned over by keeper Lee Hook.

The Wings introduced Marlon Patterson for the injured Chris Moore at half-time and it had an immediate impact.

Moments after Eastbourne's Neil Jenkins was lucky to stay on the pitch after kicking out at Ellis Green, Patterson crossed for Montague to drive in from the edge of the box on 55 minutes.

The pair combined again 11 minutes later but Montague's header went wide, while Scott Ramsay lobbed the ball over from long range.

The game's major talking point came six minutes from time when Eastbourne keeper Hook clattered into Montague on the edge of the area. The referee ordered a free-kick and only showed a yellow card, much to the frustration of the strong travelling support.

Their mood was not brightened three minutes later when Welling faield to clear their lines and Crabb turned the ball home to dump the Wings out.
