Kent set for battle of the spinners

MIN PATEL: in good form for MCC at Arundel last week

KENT, without England men Geraint Jones and Rob Key, will be looking to revive their flagging fortunes with an improved performance at Hove where they take on Division 1 strugglers Sussex in a Frizzell championship match starting tomorrow.

Sussex, the current county champions, are set to include their two premier spinners Mushtaq Ahmed and Mark Davis, and Kent appear likely to follow suit by naming Min Patel and James Tredwell.

Patel warmed up for the game with two West Indies wickets for the MCC at Arundel last week which, according to the former England spinner, proved a good run out.

“Brian Lara had a bit of a go about the standard of the MCC side but had to eat a bit of humble pie when we gave them such a good run for their money,” said Patel.

“He was in awesome form but I got a couple of wickets, had another couple of chances dropped and was generally pleased with the way I bowled.”

Martin Saggers is rated doubtful after a recurrence of a knee injury in Tuesday’s league defeat to Hampshire, so Alamgir Sheriyar and Ben Trot will vie for his place in the side.

Kent from: Smith, Fulton, Symonds, Walker, Carberry, Tredwell, O’Brien, Patel, Khan, Butler, Loudon, Sheriyar, Trott, (Saggers), (Key).
