Mark Stimson wants a "yes or no" from Kevin Maher and will make the midfielder an offer this weekend in a bid to get a decision.
The Gillingham manager wants the 31-year-old to help lead the club’s charge back into League 1 but admits he can’t wait forever.
"We’re going to try and put something to him in the next 48 hours and force his arm a little," said Stimson.
"We want to know whether he’s going to join or us not. It would be great if he did because he looks good in training.
"I know he’s good enough to play in Division 1 and that’s probably eating away in his mind.
"If we were a Division 1 side he would have signed by now. It’s not right to have him training with us and me thinking he could be in my plans – I would like to know yes or no."
