Welling United have asked the Football Conference to lift their transfer embargo after reaching a formal agreement with HMRC.

The Wings, who have been under the embargo since the start of the season, made a five-figure payment to the taxman on Tuesday.

The club confirmed they have cleared all of tax liabilities of 2011 and have now reduced the debt which had arisen from September to December last year.

"We hope that all supporters of the Club will welcome what we believe to be very positive news," said a club statement.

"With the implementation of some eminently achievable commercial and business initiatives we are confident that we will meet all our financial targets and in so doing comfortably clear our liabilities with HMRC and thus start the 2011-12 season in far better shape than we have been in for some considerable time."

Welling have had to operate with a squad of 16 players all season, only allowing to move players around under special circumstances. They had just 11 players available on Tuesday night against Bromley.

In a clear message at those using internet forums to discuss the club's plight, Welling's solicitors voiced their disapproval.

"In recent weeks certain postings have potentially jeopardised weeks of careful negotiations with HMRC and all the more frustrating was the inaccuracy of the statements made," a statement said.

"We have from time to time spoken to some of the lenders and they share our frustration with certain postings that have been made and have assured us that they are not representative of their own views.

"We therefore hope that going forward a little more consideration will be given to the potential impact of postings that are made, unless of course those individuals just wish to see the club fail."

The full extent and cost of repairing the floodlight, where a fire started inside the pylon on Tuesday night, is expected to be known on Friday.
