Travellers have set up home on one of Medway’s busiest roundabouts.

The unwelcome visitors arrived on the edge of the Medway City Estate in Strood on Thursday night.

Around a dozen caravans have been parked on the grass verge next to the roundabout on Vanguard Way.

The busy junction provides access to the industrial estate, which has more than 400 businesses, and is the main route from the A2 to the Medway Tunnel.

It is not the first time the area has been blighted by an illegal encampment. In 2006 travellers invaded a car park on the Medway City Estate, leaving behind a hefty clean-up bill.

Local shop owners and businesses will also be concerned. The last time travellers set up camp there were several reports of anti-social behaviour in the area.

The travellers are expected to be moved on in the next few days.

A spokesman for Medway Council, said: “Medway Council is aware of the travellers’ arrival and is taking appropriate action to move them on. They will be served with a Section 77 order under the Criminal Justice Act, 1994."
