A 32-year-old Lithuanian man appeared before Canterbury magistrates today charged with murdering his girlfriend.

Tomas Uptas is alleged to have strangled Loretta Ralipys at the bedsit they shared in Victoria Road, Canterbury, on Thursday, November 26.

He is also accused of possessing a BB gas gun pistol with the intention to cause fear of violence.

Uptas spoke through an interpreter to acknowledge the charge and confirm his identity.

He made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on December 21.

No plea was given.
