Hectic night for firefighters

BEXLEY firefighters were busy last night with their Fire Rescue Unit and pump ladder being called to two separate incidents.

The station’s expert Urban Search and Rescue team went to the scene of a collapsed building in Whitechapel.

The crew, who are specially trained and can be sent to incidents across London, were called out just after midnight and spent eight hours working on the building in Commercial Road. Rescue workers were still searching this morning for anyone trapped in the four-storey building in East London.

Another crew from Bexley were called in the early hours to tackle a car alight on a drive. One car was destroyed and another partially damaged by the fire.

There were fears the flames might have spread to the house in Bridgen Road, Bexley, but crews were eventually able to contain the fire.

Police are investigating the incident.
