Gillingham captain Adam Barrett insists the team won’t be easing off this weekend.

The Gills have a formidable away record, with just one defeat on their travels and the best defensive record in the division.

Barrett (pictured), who sits at the heart of the club’s defence, doesn’t want to see all of that good work unravel now that promotion is sewn up.

He said: “It was a big relief to clinch promotion and it was fantastic to do it at home. We now have a massive game on Saturday.

“Cheltenham are in and amongst it themselves and they are looking for promotion. They are very strong at home and we are very strong away. We are looking forward to it and we know if we win we are champions.

“We want to make sure we do it. There is a great hunger in the dressing room and we have worked extremely hard all season and put in a hell of a lot of effort. Just because we are promoted to let that slip now would be crazy.

“We will be focused and it will be nice because a little bit of the pressure is off as we are promoted and the main aim is done but we are in touching distance of the league title.”

Barrett knows just one win from the last three games will see the team get their hands on the League 2 title. And as captain, he can’t wait to hold the trophy aloft.

“Promotion was fantastic but the history of the club shows they have only ever won a title once before,” said the 33-year-old skipper.

“It has been 50 years since the last title and it just shows these opportunities don’t come around very often. I have been lucky enough to win a title before and it is a special occasion.

“To go up as champions, to be the best team in the league, it’s what every player should strive for.

“To win the trophy as captain of this football club would be a very proud moment for myself and we need to make sure it happens. There is great determination in our squad and we need to make sure it happens.

“I am extremely proud to be captain and it’s been a great honour to have come here to a fantastic club. There are a great set of lads here, I enjoy working with them and the staff, who have been tremendous. It is a really tight-knit group and we all stick together and it would be a great moment for myself.

“There is nothing like lifting a trophy when you know you have been the best team in the division. So far we have been the best but we still have to get over that line.”
