Luke Rooney has joined Blue Square Bet Premier side Eastbourne Borough on loan.

The young midfielder has moved to Priory Lane on an initial one month deal.

Rooney (pictured) has been unable to nail down a first team place under Andy Hessenthaler and so has dropped down a division to get regular Saturday football.

Hessenthaler have given Borough permission to play Rooney in their FA Cup qualifying match against Harrow this weekend and he is expected to go straight into their match-day squad.

It’s the second time Rooney has been on loan at Eastbourne, having scored twice in eight appearances at the back end of last season.

Rooney progressed through Gillingham’s youth set-up and has made 24 appearances for the club since making his debut in August 2009. He has been restricted mostly to the bench, however, making just two league starts.
