A Margate shop's been shut down after its electrics were said to pose "a real danger to the public".

Thanet council environmental officers found serious dangers with the electrical system at The Gate Discount Stores at 120 High Street.

It was said to be running lights, its till, a refrigerator, a computer terminal and heating on extension leads from one 13 amp socket in a neighbouring shop.

After a prohibition notice was served, the owners were told to ensure the electricity supply and all systems, such as fire alarms and emergency lighting, are correctly reconnected.

Cllr Simon Moores, cabinet member for environmental services, said: "It's clear the way the electrics were being used in this shop posed a real danger to the public, which is why our officers took action and closed it down.

"We can't allow businesses to operate in this way, as we have a duty to keep the public safe."
