Charlton fan attacked on way to match

BRITISH Transport Police are appealing to members of the public for help after rival football fans were involved in serious disorder at a railway station.

BTP Det Con Andy Parkinson said a fight occurred at Sydenham Station at about 2.20pm on Saturday involving a group of up to 30 people.

A 24-year-old man, who was going to the Crystal Palace versus Charlton game and had boarded at New Cross Gate, was travelling with his brother, father and two friends when they were attacked in the carriage as it pulled into Sydneham station.

Det Con Parkinson said: "The victim, a Charlton supporter, was assaulted and suffered a nose injury requiring hospital treatment. Several members of his family were also attacked during the incident in which bottles and cans were thrown in the carriage.

"It is believed that there are a large number of witnesses to this incident, including members of the public not connected to football and also innocent supporters."

Anyone who was on the train and can assist police by providing a statement or who knows who was involved in the disorder is urged to contact the BTP Witness Appeal Line on 0207 391 5275 quoting background log B15 of 4/9/2007.
