We tried to book a visit to Kent and Medway’s recycling centres

With every major event from Glastonbury to Wimbledon cancelled, there is a new contender for the hottest ticket in town, getting a slot to dump your rubbish at one of the county's tips.

I tried to bag a coveted slot at the grand reopening of Kent and Medway's household waste recycling centres. Here's how it went...

I logged on early, 25 minutes early, to book my slot, but had to wait as I was looking at a page on Kent County Council's website telling me the booking system was not live.

I refreshed hundreds of times in case it went live a bit early, but at 11.02am, I still couldn't' see a booking icon to click on.

But just then this purple box appeared and I started clicking on it, I was very excited.

I'm going to get one I thought, I click, click and click, but I can't even get into the booking queue.

The page could not be reached.

My anxiety goes on for about 15 minutes... just clicking and not getting anywhere, then, finally, I am over the moon to see I can get on the page, which transfers you to Medway Council's website, as they designed the booking system.

It's allowed me to join the queue. Yippee!

The 15 minute wait was worth it I thought, yes, I am finally going to get rid of all my rubbish in the garden.

I'd been doing a bit of DIY during lockdown and all the waste from that, has been dumped out the back.

I also have an old settee out there which I need to get rid off. Yes, I think, I am finally going to get my garden sorted and I'll be able to enjoy sitting in it on hot days.

But I was horrified to see I have more than 8,000 people in front of me... I sob.

I am going to be here for hours and hours. My queue number is 8373 and the number of people in the queue ahead of me, is 8002... I will be here all day.

In fact in the 15 minutes since I got in the queue, it's been paused, so I have not actually made any progress in that time as I am still in the same position I was when I first joined the queue.

The queue is still paused.

I check every two minutes, to see if I am getting closer to booking as slot. No, still not moving.

I will be here all day and I am still waiting now. No further on.

Wait, wait, 10 minutes later at 11.33am my number updates, I now only have 7992 people ahead of me in the queue. By this rate it will be at least midnight.

Actually it fills me with dread about when that will be, I am guessing it will be at least several weeks if not months when I actually get a slot and I am able to visit a site, so I can enjoy my back garden again.

There is hope...it is going down and seven minutes later, I am 7928th in the queue.

I may be lucky at some point today I guess, as by 11.45am, the numbers have gone down by 200-odd and now there are just 7732 people in front of me.

I can't leave the queue the page tells me or I will lose my place and will have to start all over again.

By noon, I only have 7550 people in front of me. However, I suppose I am the lucky one.

A friend is also trying to book, he was in the queue, but clicked back on the main page service it said he had to re-enter the queue at number, 15,000!

Lets hope my internet provider doesn't fail me today.

Finally, hours after waiting and multiple attempts it's over. I've managed to get what seems like a sacred time slot.

The queueing is the hard part, but now it's straight forward as I put in my car details and pick a time and a date.
