Three hurt as barge explodes

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after an explosion on a Thames barge off Gravesend left three workers with burns.

The explosion happened on board the K Toulsen yesterday aftrnoon while the 53m cargo barge was against the sea wall at Clifton Marine Parade. Two contractors were working on board with a crew member.

All three were taken to hospital with burns to their faces and necks. One was released today.

Fire Brigade spokesman Mark Skinner said: "There was some form of explosion in one of the holds and a large amount of oil was spilled onto the deck. It was dangerous and very slippery."

PLA deputy harbourmaster Roy Stanbrook said: "There will be a full investigation by the independent Marine Accident Investigation Branch into the exact events that led to the explosion."
