Nell's Cafe in Gravesend set to reopen after filming takes place for HBO and Sky comedy-horror series The Baby

A popular roadside cafe is set to reopen its doors as filming for a major new Sky/HBO series draws to a close.

Nell's Cafe in Gravesend has been shut all week with a road closure in place along the entrance off the A2 roundabout via Valley Drive.

In recent days a mysterious motif reading "Crookies cookies" was erected in place of the diner's iconic sign, fuelling speculation online that the greasy spoon – a haven for movie and TV crews – had shut for yet more filming.

Today production members were spotted on set once more with Costa Coffee deliveries, large camera apparatus and brollies in tow.

Cascades Leisure Centre was also being used as an overflow car park for crews.

It is reported the cafe has been transformed for use in a new comedy-horror series called The Baby.

The Sky and HBO co-production is being produced by global content company SISTER, whose credits include the critically acclaimed Chernobyl and Gangs of London series.

It has been described as a "raw examination of motherhood" and the horrifying rules that affect women differently.

The series will follow the story of 38-year-old Natasha who is unexpectedly landed with a baby.

But it's no average baby. The infant is described as "controlling, manipulative and has violent powers" turning Natasha’s usual independent life upside down.

The eight-part series will air on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW and stars Michelle De Swarte, who featured in Netflix's The Duchess, starring comedian Katherine Ryan.

Earlier this week Nell's Cafe informed its loyal customers online it would be shutting for a while.

A post from the diner read: "Nell's will be closed from Monday August 9, reopen again on Saturday 14 at 7am.

"We apologise to all our customers for any inconvenience and we will hopefully make it up to you once we reopen."

Today is understood to be the production companies' last day of filming on set.

Sandra Hassan, owner of the cafe, is no stranger to film crews taking over her business at short intervals.

Sky One's Temple, starring Mark Strong, was filmed at the diner and the BBC America drama Killing Eve, starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer was also shot on location.

The diner boss took over the cafe five years ago and is regularly contacted by production crews wanting to hire out the premises.

"I'm pretty easy going," she said. "They don't have someone in their earhole 24 hours a day.

"We have got a big enough car park to park all their trucks and lighting equipment.

"Also we have changed all the windows recently and the view is quite good as well."

Location is also crucial, Ms Hassan adds, with the cafe situated just off the A2 along its own private road, meaning production crews do not have to spend added time navigating road closures with local councils.

In April Torn singer Natalie Imbruglia was spotted filming at the cafe for her latest music video "Built it Better".

After watching the finished product, Ms Hassan joked: "The thing is they still had the Nell's sign on the wall. I could not buy that kind of advertising."

But the business owner says the latest filming is among the biggest with a week the longest the cafe has been closed for any one production.

"They are really nice girls, lads and actresses," she added.

But the cafe boss was most looking forward to firing up the grills for her loyal customers come Saturday when the diner reopens.

"It is the first time I'm going to go up there this afternoon for the last day of filming," she said.

"But I just want to make sure they put my cafe back the way it was before."
