At 4.25pm on the same day, detectives arrested Harry Harris, of Stanway Close, Chigwell, Essex, on suspicion of murder.

They say the victim, who was 44, and suspect were known to each other.

Yesterday residents reacted with shock at the news, describing the victim as a 'normal guy' who kept to himself.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorised a charge of murder against Mr Harris earlier today and he appeared via video-link at Medway Magistrates' Court.

He is also charged with possession of a knife and was remanded in custody.
