Volunteers launch this summer's Brighter Dover project

MORE than £4,600 has been raised for the Brighter Dover project which aims to make sure that the town has floral decorations throughout the summer.

It is organised by Sylvie Parsons, who has recruited a number of volunteers and supporters to make the project a success.

She launched it when the local authorities said they didn’t have sufficient funding to provide floral displays in the town centre last year.

Another fundraising evening is planned on Saturday May 11 at the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club when the Swingtime Sweethearts will provide the entertainment, and there will be a buffet and raffle. The mayor, Cllr Anne Smith, will be among those attending the event which is from 7.30 for 8pm.

Tickets, which are £10, are available from the yacht club or by calling 01304 206262.

“I am very grateful to all those who are supporting this evening,” said Mrs Parsons.

“So far Brighter Dover has raised £4,610. Once we have reached £5,200 we should be able to buy the topiary.

"We will still need then in the region of £2,300 to create the sea of lavender and the frame of box hedge to complete the project.

"This investment for the Market Square should enhance the area for the pleasure of the residents, businesses and tourists. Well cared for, it should last for many years to come.”

Some of the supporters of the project met outside Dover Town Council offices to help relaunch this season’s work.
