Burst main leaves businesses in Queen Street, Deal, without water

Around 60 properties in Deal are without a water supply today because of a faulty main.

Contemporary Flowers, Co-op Funeral Care and the East Kent Mercury office, all in Queen Street, have been unable to turn their taps on since this morning.

Wetherspoons, Mens Style by Aaron, Miles and Barr and the Hole in the Roof, in the same road, are among those unaffected.

Sarah Fairman from Contemporary Flowers said: "We've had to go out and buy a six pack on bottled water for our small bouquets.

"Luckily, our delivery is tomorrow not today.

"We've been told it's the result on a burst main and it should be back on in the next hour."

A spokesman for Southern Water said: “We carry out proactive leak detection work across our region in a bid to find and fix issues before they become a problem.

"During this work we discovered a leak on the 6” main in High Street, Deal, late last night and immediately began work to repair it.

“Our team worked through the night to fix the issue. However, as this is a complex repair [it is a junction of a 6” main joining a 9” pipe, which is set on a curve] we have had to turn off the water to around 60 properties whilst the urgent repairs are ongoing.

“We apologise to everyone affected by our work and thank them for their patience.

"We are hoping to have the repair completed and water restored to all affected properties within the next couple of hours.”
