Adam Birchall completed a five-figure move to Gillingham on Tuesday but insists his love for Dover will never die.

The striker, who netted 46 goals for Whites last season, agreed a three-year deal with the League 2 club.

Gillingham, AFC Wimbledon and Swindon all had offers accepted by Whites chairman Jim Parmenter.

Birchall said: "I am a Dover fan now for life. Nobody can change that for me no matter where I go and I will always have fond memories of Dover and everything that we went through together. It was a privilege to play for them."

Mr Parmenter dismissed Gillingham’s first offer for Birchall as a "joke" but after accepting bids elsewhere, the club came back with an acceptable offer.

Dover received an "undisclosed fee" for Birchall and Mr Parmenter believes the club should now look forward.

He said: "I would have liked to keep the player at the football club but if he says he doesn’t want to play for the club anymore, it’s a pointless exercise. Who am I to stand in the way of a young man’s career?"

Last Friday manager Martin Hayes strengthened his attack by signing Chelmsford’s Billy Bricknell and more new faces are likely to follow.

"There has always been money available to bolster the squad and we have signed some fantastic players this season, who in my opinion, are better or as good as those which have left," said Mr Parmenter.
