Police were called to a report that a vehicle had deliberately reversed into the shop. It had left the scene when the call was made, and it is believed nothing was stolen.

The vehicle was described as a green Mitsubishi Shogun, with silver bumpers and a spare wheel on the back.

It comes just weeks after the supermarket was relaunched after a two-month makeover.

It underwent improvements with the aim of giving it a more “spacious” feel for customers when shopping.

There is also new refrigeration throughout the supermarket, leading to a better range of fresh and chilled produce, ready meals and frozen products.

The store’s shutters have been dented and crumpled and the cash machine has been damaged too.

Laura Manston, a Green Party councillor for the area, said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear about the attack on our Co-op this morning.

“The refurbishment was only completed 10 days ago. It looks like they were after the cash machine but, from what I understand, the criminals got away empty-handed and nobody was injured.

“Police and forensics are on site and CCTV is being reviewed. The store will be closed until further notice but we have a wonderful store manager, Laura Parry, who I know will re-open as soon as possible.

“We urge anyone with any information to please contact the police or Crimestoppers."

Police are appealing for CCTV and witnesses following the attempted cash machine theft.

Residents living close to the crime scene and any surrounding roads are being asked to check doorbell and CCTV cameras for any important footage.

Drivers are also asked to review any dashcam which may assist the investigation. Images and video can be uploaded here.

Anyone with other information should call Kent Police on 01622 604100, quoting reference 27-0107.
