Fire off the A20 in Swanley causes traffic chaos near A20, M25 and M20 close to the Swanley Interchange

A 200-metre cordon is in place and businesses have been evacuated after a fire involving a gas cylinder.

Three fire engines and a bulk water carrier are at industrial premises off the A20 London Road in Swanley.

Crews arrived at 8.51am. Kent Police and National Highways traffic officers are also on scene.

Affected areas of the A20, M25 and M20, near to the Swanley Interchange, have been closed while emergency services continue to work at the scene.

At just after 11.30am, tailbacks on the London-bound M20 were stretching back three miles.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews have extinguished the fire involving a gas cylinder and are now cooling the surrounding area to ensure the site is safe.

“The technical rescue unit is also in attendance.”

An update from them at 11.28am said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service remains at the scene of a fire at an industrial premises off the A20 London Road, Swanley, but the surrounding roads, including the M20, M25 and A20, will shortly be reopened.

“Crews are continuing to dampen down to ensure the site is safe.”

No injuries have been reported.
