Traffic clogs city after pensioner injured

TRAFFIC jammed Canterbury on Monday evening after two accidents and the closure of two main roads.

New Dover Road was closed for four hours from 3.40pm after a 75-year-old cyclist and a 10-12 tonne HGV collided at the junction with Barton Road.

The pensioner was seriously injured and taken to the Kent and Canterbury Hospital. The road remained closed and the scene preserved until police were told the injuries were not believed life threatening. The road was reopened at 7.50pm.

As traffic clogged the city, a second accident at the A28 between Canterbury and Chilham meant that road was closed from 5.12pm until 6pm.

Two vehicles were involved in the crash half a mile towards the city from Chilham Sports Cars garage. Three people suffered minor injuries.

The A28 reopened at 6pm but it was 7pm before traffic flow resumed to normal due to a huge tailbacks.
