Nepalese and Indian restaurant Gurkha Bhansa Ghar reopens in Ashford

A town centre restaurant has reopened following a £55,000 makeover.

New bosses behind Gurkha Bhansa Ghar in Ashford say the "adventure" has only just begun after completing the month-long revamp.

The renovation project included removing a wall inside the Apsley Street restaurant in order to make the dining space open plan.

Gurkha Bhansa Ghar originally opened back in November 2015, but was taken over by new co-owners and partners Ganesh Chandra Rai and Ritu Jadegu Limbu last month.

They are being helped by Ganesh’s son, Janadhip Rai.

The 24-year-old, who moved to Ashford in 2006 and is the restaurant's front of house manager, says a number of changes have been carried out during the refurb.

Mr Rai explained: "The restaurant changed ownership on April 1 and we then closed for about a month.

"We did some renovations including repainting and revamping it into something more modern because it had a very old, traditional look.

"The restaurant was also quite small and narrow before because it had a private room inside.

"So we took down the wall separating it and there is now one big floor.

"We also levelled some of the floor as the bar area was quite high, so we've managed to squeeze in some more tables.

"I don't think the restaurant has had any real changes before that since it opened nine years ago."

It has also seen the number of seats increase from around 50 to 70.

Mr Rai says big changes are on the cards for the restaurant too in the future should its menu prove popular.

"We are very excited about the restaurant and definitely excited about just getting started on this adventure.”
