A scaffolder walked into an outlet store and selected two pairs of trainers in their boxes, before leaving without paying.

Marley Edmed, 24, entered the Nike store at the Designer Outlet Centre in Ashford in June and stole the trainers, worth £200.

When staff realised the items were missing, they reviewed CCTV and saw Edmed select the trainers and then put a pair of socks in one of the boxes and leave the store.

He was identified by police and a couple of days later arrested at his home where officers also found a small quantity of cannabis.

Edmed, of Laurens Van Der Pots Way, Ashford, was charged with shoplifting and possession of a Class B drug.

He admitted the offences when appearing at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on August 9.

Prosecuting, Neil Sweeney told the court the shoplifting offence happened on June 25 and Edmed was arrested on June 29.

He added: “It was 13.41pm and he walked into the Nike store at the Designer Outlet Centre in Ashford and selected two boxes of trainers.

“The CCTV was checked and he was seen selecting socks and then puts a pair in the trainer boxes and leaves without paying.

“He was later identified and arrested at his home address and officers found cannabis bags, a few deal bags, it was for personal use only.

District Judge Justin Barron also heard Edmed was in breach of a conditional discharge he’d been given in October 2022 for another shoplifting offence, when he committed the new offences.

The judge decided to sentence Edmed over all three matters and placed him on a 12-month community order which will see him carry out 40 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay the Nike store £200 compensation, a £214 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
