Asylum seeker told to sell car to pay fine

AN ASYLUM seeker who claimed he had no money to pay his court fine was told to sell his car to raise funds.

Saed Abbas, of Bond Road, South Ashford, appeared before magistrates on Wednesday charged with having no driving licence and using a vehicle without insurance in Beaver Road in July.

Abbas, 24, whose application for asylum was refused by the Home Office, told the court that he had no money to pay the £100 fine imposed for the no insurance charge.

But magistrates told him to sell the Honda Accord he had been driving at the time to raise the cash. They also banned him from driving for six months.

Through an interpreter Abbas said: "I do respect the law and I have applied for a driving licence, but I had no reply."

The £100 fine will be added to Abbas's outstanding fines of £552.
